Lead Climbing Test Out
Already know your way around the sharp end?
If you’re an experienced lead climber or are lead-certified at another gym, you can test out rather than taking our full Lead Climbing Class.
To lead climb or lead belay at Vertical Ventures, you’ll need to demonstrate your skills to our staff and meet VV’s lead-climbing standards.
During your test out, you’ll be asked to demonstrate:
- proper knots and tie-in
- partner and equipment checks
- clipping technique and rope management
- lead climbing communication
- lead belaying with an approved assisted-braking device
- catching and managing falls
- safe, controlled lead climbing technique
Passing the test earns your Vertical Ventures lead certification.
This test is intended for climbers who already have lead climbing and belaying experience.
If you’re new to lead climbing, please book our Lead Climbing Class instead.
The Lead Climbing Test Out is an evaluation, not an instructional class. Staff may provide brief feedback, but participants should arrive prepared to independently demonstrate the required lead climbing and belaying skills.
Skills Evaluated
During the test, you will be evaluated on:
- Knots
- Climbing commands and communication
- Lead belaying with a GriGri or other approved assisted-braking device
- Lead climbing technique
- Clipping
- Falling and fall management
Only assisted-braking belay devices are permitted.
Participants must demonstrate safe, proper technique throughout the test. Failure to demonstrate competency in any required skill may result in the test ending immediately.
